Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls from the official, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
