The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
