Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
